American Robin 2/17/16

Robins disappear from our lawns in late fall, but instead of migrating south most of them gather up into small roving flocks, so that when you do see them in the winter months, chances are you’ll find a whole tree full of them rather than just one or two. They surround a good source of winter fruit, clean it out, and then move on to a new source. Winter flocks of robins often include other foraging groups of birds like waxwings and blackbirds, but scan them carefully, it’s in the relative safety of these mixed groups that you might find one of the rarer winter vagrants, like a flicker, sapsucker, or tanager.
