American Wigeon 3/12/10
Back in early December I posted a photo of a drake American Wigeon, which fetched up at Plum Island, but just the other day I was able to get nice close ups of this female above. With that delicately patterned head and cinnamon flanks, she was a standout among a couple dozen Mallards and Black Ducks dabbling in a small Hampton Falls pond. Just goes to show that it’s often worth scanning a group of common birds to find something unusual. American Wigeon are only winter residents here on the East Coast, and soon will begin their long migration to the provinces of western Canada, Alaska, and the Rocky Mountain states.
