Killdeer 12/16/09

Being the middle of December one doesn’t expect to stumble across a Killdeer, maybe in parts of Connecticut and farther south, but finding one along the NH coast is definitely unusual, especially on such a cold and blustery day. They belong to the Plover family of shorebirds which all have short bills and big eyes. Killdeer are slender than most and are famous for their broken-wing act of distracting predators away from their nests. They are found across North America and some migrate as far south as Central and northern South America. This one fetched up today in the Jenness Beach parking lot in Rye, NH.

We have a flock of Killdeer in a field across from my home outside of Dunnellon Fl, I have never seen them here before, but they are fun to watch.
